A "day" at the beach~~~

Last Friday was the Vernal Equinox....but spring is still in question here in Maine!  Since the day was warmer than bitter cold I decided to head to the coast for a beach moment.  I craved walking on thawed ground.  The little town beach in Searsport is one of my favorite nearby bits of coast. I had the beach all to my Self...go figure!  The steps down to the beach were still snow filled (those are handrails in the photo...not ankle rails!).  I had come prepared with my handy neoprene muck boots,  so no worries.

I meandered for a time and enjoyed the sound of waves, wind, & seagulls.
It was good to feel salt air on my face.
I hadn't been to coast since last fall.

Of course, I was looking for sea glass. I found some nice pieces.  This purple pieces was my most exciting find!  The tide was very low on account of the New Moon.  I walked on parts of the beach I had never been before.  I would have stayed longer but I admit to getting quite cold.  Chilled to the bone but refreshed by the sea.

Here is poem I love by the beloved, Pablo Neruda

The Sea
I need the sea because it teaches me.
I don’t know if I learn music or awareness,
if it’s a single wave or its vast existence,
or only its harsh voice or its shining
suggestion of fishes and ships.
The fact is that until I fall asleep,
in some magnetic way I move in
the university of the waves.
It’s not simply the shells crunched
as if some shivering planet
were giving signs of its gradual death;
no, I reconstruct the day out of a fragment,
the stalactite from the sliver of salt,
and the great god out of a spoonful.
What it taught me before, I keep. It’s air
ceaseless wind, water and sand.
It seems a small thing for a young man,
to have come here to live with his own fire;
nevertheless, the pulse that rose
and fell in its abyss,
the crackling of the blue cold,
the gradual wearing away of the star,
the soft unfolding of the wave
squandering snow with its foam,
the quiet power out there, sure
as a stone shrine in the depths,
replaced my world in which were growing
stubborn sorrow, gathering oblivion,
and my life changed suddenly:
as I became part of its pure movement.

---Shop News--- Spring?

Well, folks this is how it looks out of my window today.  Yes, that is snow falling out of the sky...again.  It feels so odd to be this late into March with such a snowpack.  The Polar Vortex continues~~~~ I have to admit I feel a bit of wanderlust, lately.  I have been home on this land for 14 days without leaving.  But it is not leaving I desire, it is getting off my beaten path.

On Tuesday it was a brilliantly sunny day but it felt like I was in refrigerator when I stepped outside.  With the cold I thought I might venture off my packed snow path.  It was great to be somewhere else!  I went into the field and stayed close to the woods edge.  I took my steps carefully....

Finally, I needed to head back into the woods in order to get back home...

I sunk repeatedly up to my knees....this is not pleasant and a bit uncomfortable since you never know which step will be a sinking one...(my snowshoes are broken)

So back to my well worn path.

Today I was reluctant to go for my walk even though it is above frigid today...I  went out with a lightweight hat!  Just weary of winter, I guess?  But, Runa must have her romp and her joyful spirit helped me along.  The snow is starting to rot.  So even on my packet path a slight misstep and wham-O I am down.  Akkk!  Finally, I made it to my sitting place and sat.  Some quiet and breathing restored my spirit.    Out of the Polar Vortex of the Mind!

The Zen of Sea Glass or How I spent Black Friday

Catch of the Day!

I love to collect, which makes me think I might be part squirrel or magpie. Although, I   have the very best intentions of using all my trinkets in projects, this is not possible.   Recently, I have taken stock of my many treasures.  I have more than I can possibly use in a normal lifetime.  Yet I still collect.  I have tried to stop.  So, I ask myself why?

On Black Friday, I had an opportunity to look at one obsession more closely, the collecting of sea glass.  I took my son and his girlfriend to Belfast, Maine so they could shop and take in a movie.   Belfast is a perfect place to leave a couple of teens.  They can walk everywhere and it is a safe, peaceful place.  I am a collector,  but not much of a shopper.  So, I headed to the local beach because it was a glorious day in Maine, especially for November.  The sun was shining and it was pretty comfortable, despite the stiff breeze.  I   was ready with a turkey sandwich, a bottle of water, and a canvas bag for collecting.

Collecting sea glass requires a certain sort of walk and focus.  Your eyes are down, you can't wear sun glasses, and you must walk slowly.  It is like a Zen walk.  The objective is to cover as much beach as possible.  So, you need to walk in a zigzag pattern along the shore.  You are watching with awareness for that variation in the sand and pebbles that means TREASURE!

It is this process that I love so much.  It is peaceful.  I am surrounded by the sound of the waves which lull my mind to quiet.  Every now and then I  stand and stretch to take in the sights around me...beauty!  The sea glass search slows me down, which is something I need in life.  Also, there is something in me that makes being productive necessary.  Collecting fulfills this need, and gives me an excuse to go to the beach.

I have recently realized that I love the hunt more than the "having".  I have started a second Etsy Shop: www.injoytreasures.etsy.com to release my collections and create more space in my life.  Thank goodness for Etsy...or the contents of my attic may have caved in the house!  Etsy helps with my obsessive need to be productive...but that sounds like another blog!

Process Enraptures my Soul!

Here are a few of those enrapturing moments....

Ahhhh...Stretch....See...Sea

My favorite photo....this is how I found a little green piece of sea glass...it was nearly washed out to sea before I  nabbed it....the word "no" is on it...I took it anyways!
