Juno ~ Clean Up!

Here is a little photo journal of our clean up after Winter Storm Juno.  Not sure how much snow we got because, in some spots it was 4 feet deep and in others it was bare ground.  We got outside early before the sun was fully up to begin the plowing and shoveling.

 DH had to hand shovel the drifts in front of the house before he could plow.

 VERY grateful for the Tractor & the Operator!

Especially when back dragging those big drifts!

I shoveled out the Ducks...before

After

 Then the "Bears Cave"...before

Some pretty nice piles of snow!

The sun, finally, came out later in the day and it was beautiful!

Even the Ducks got in a little sunning!

Winter Storm Juno ~ Morning

 Storm or no storm, duck chores must be done! Crazy blowing & drifting snow!!  One step is knee deep the next the snow is blown clear.  This snow stings the eyes---YIKES!  Needless to say we got  our outside stuff done quickly and returned to the safety of the house!  The wind is picking up even more!  Going to be quite a ride!!

Runa not exactly thrilled with the outside world!

Vern has the best seat in the house.

Pause & See ::: a Visitor

Looking out my window right now this is what you would see~~~big, fluffy, wet snowflakes coming down.  9 to 16 inches is the last prediction I saw...I will keep you posted!  I better get this blog done quick...there has been some power flickers already!  This is what I call March Madness!

But what I want to share with you happened earlier this week.  I went for my walk in the woods without my camera because I was carrying a pack basket full of cracked corn for the wild turkeys.  I have stopped feeding them near the house since the coyotes took all of my ducks.  I figured I was luring their natural prey near my house.  This  made it a bit easier for the coyote family to choose duck for dinner.

So walking away from the corn I saw these prints!

I went back to the house and got my camera AND a ruler...

MOOSE PRINTS!

Funny thing is my son's guest told us she wanted to see a Moose before she graduated.  I told her it is fairly rare to see a Moose around here.  In 20 years, I have only seen one Moose on this property.  Next day after she left Moose Tracks!  Go figure!  And I am not leaving the camera behind again!  Well, time to batten down the hatches and stare out the window~~Happy Storm!

This is a regular feature on my blog.  I try to see something new each day. The art of seeing is essential to any creative work in my humble opinion.  My favorites are the ones that stop me in my tracks!  Like so many folks I have a very busy mind that I struggle to quiet.  But by creating this practice it has given me many opportunities to pause and be with a new wonder.  I love to wonder about wonders.  These little seeings can be just the jolt my creative process needs to get out of a rut.  But mostly they provide a pause which is that moment of peace I need to heal from a frustration. These seeings are grounding for me and bring me to the present.  I will admit to laughing out loud with joy over some of my discoveries, they are a moment of childlike wonder!

~~~Gratitude~~~
4 Direction Tree
My last blog was about time....hmmm...Sunday Gratitude on Tuesday Tip Day....I am always thrown for a loop when we have to change the clock.  I don't understand how it saves energy...maybe in a city?  But here the time changes seems to deplete people energy!  But this is Not Gratitude!!!
I try each day to sit and BE quiet.  I won't call it formal meditation, it is just sitting and quieting.  My house buzzzes so I try and go outside for my sitting.  Even with the super cold we have been having I just bundle up.  Also, I sit after I have walked so my body is warm and Runa is satisfied to sniff about.
I have two sitting places right now.  One is this sideways growing old wild apple trees.  It makes for a  lovely bench.  My scarf makes a nice seat cushion and is easy to carry when I walk.  This spot is near the house and I can stare at this beautiful tree.  It is a big old pine with 4 huge trunks coming out of the base.  This tree is a wonderful focal point and helps quiet my mind. I call it the 4 Direction Tree.
My other spot is further in the woods near the spring on this downed old apple tree.  This spot is nice because it faces south and I can enjoy the warmth on my face.  I am grateful for taking time most every day to just sit.  Some days, due to my busy life it is only for a few minutes.  But I find the practice of quieting helps make the busy-ness flow more peacefully.
Sunshine warms my face & my soul!
MY SITTING DOWN PLACE
I go down to the creek
Where the water gurgles
Joyfully
As it hurries along
Over the shining sand and pebbles
To its destiny
With the sea.
Dappled sunlight
Flits and moves
Across the water,
over the creek bank;
And the birds sing happily
To the accompaniment
Of insects and crickets.
I sit in silence as
I soak it all into my soul.
Peace flows
From the water
To my heart.
Whatever life brings me
I now can face
Because of this,
My sitting down place!
(I know this poem is a bit summery~~but even I could use some seasonal shift at this point!)
Do you have a special place where you sit?
It is my intention, each Sunday, (OR another Day)to share something that fills me with Gratitude.
I write ~~~Gratitude~~~ with the wavy lines to represent the gratitude ENERGY~~~~~!
I hope you will join me and share your gratitude moments.
~~~Amen, Blessed Be, Namaste'~~~

Pause & See

This is a regular feature I plan to include in my blog.  I try to see something new each day. This is a photo from last week before some sun shone on the effects off the ice storm.  I must have walked/snowshoed by our old snag several times before I noticed its new two toned appearance.  I was trundling right along and then I stopped, backed up, and came in for a closer look.

The north side was totally covered with ice.  I think it is beautiful...

This old snag has a story.  I view it out my kitchen window, which is the only window on the north side of our house.  20 + years ago we were clearing this spot of land for our house site.  We did have to remove some trees to make way for our house but, we left a stand of a dozen or more Great Pines.  One day we were burning brush, we had a burn permit, but the wind picked up so we put the fire out.  We had just had our driveway put in so we took turns walking up and down the driveway while one us kept watch over the brush fire that seemed to be completely out but, we are cautious sorts.  Presently our excavator man, Clayton, showed up to discuss what was next on the construction agenda.  We both walked a few feet away from the burn site to chat with him...our backs to the fire.

Clayton during the course of our conversation asked if we were burning?  We said yes but we had put out the fire.  He pointed and said I don't think so.  We turned to see flames throughout the dry early spring tinder that lies beneath the big pines.  We all 3 sprung into action. Clayton headed for his excavator to use the big hoe to knock down the fire.  My husband & I started a bucket brigade from our pond that was a meer muck hole down a steep bank (Clayton had drained so it could dry and be dug out in the fall).  Our efforts were futile.  I took off running for the neighbors to call the fire department.

When I got back back the fire was in the big trees.  Clayton was doing his best.  My husband was still splashing the fire with water.  I found a pieces of canvas and started beating down the fire with some success.  Everytime my DH ran by me he would says something to the effect that this is it ~ its all over ~ we're going to burn the hole nieghborhood!  I had no breath for words.  The fire department did arrive and the was fire put out.  We were also saved by the bit of green new spring grass in the field behind the pines.  The ground was wet there.  The fire truck got stuck and Clayton had to pull them out.

We were grateful and sad.  All but one of the great big pines were burned.  One by one they fell down except this snag.  We leave it as a memorial to all those big beauties that fell that day.  We have planted more trees in the same spot that we dug up from our woods.  20+ years later we are enjoying the northern protection these trees give.  Good thing, the wind is picking up and it will be another cold one.

Between Old & New

 Well, folks I have been remiss when it comes to blogging.  I had many moments over the last week or so that I had hoped to write but, a few things have hindered my resolve.  The biggest one being ~WINTER~  We have had some very stormy and cold days along with intermittent power outages.
This is the true color ~ a Violet Evening!

I have, also, been distracted by year end bookkeeping.  I got behind...I have always done my bookkeeping by hand.  There is something about a sharp pencil and ledger paper that I love.  I, gratefully, had a much better Etsy year than last so time to get my geek on and create a computer spreadsheet for 2014! I am resolved!

The reason I needed to get my bookkeeping done is so I could file the FAFSA for my son.  I want to do it on the first of the month to get him at the top of the pile.  If you are a parent with a college ready child I encourage you to be fearless about this fairly simple form.  You can file BEFORE you do your taxes.  It is easy to go in and adjust everything.  Plus, the folks on the helpline are very nice and helpful!  Federal Aid is awarded first come first serve.  My helpful hint!  Anyways, I tried yesterday but the website was down. I JUST finished NOW so I am writing to you while still in my PJs!

Here is a little photo journal catch up of the last several days!  I have gone outside each day, no matter how frigid...thinking of you...with camera in hand so I can share this bit of paradise I call home!
