New Year Day Fire

2015 started cold and clear for us here in Maine.  I love to start or end the year with an outside campfire.  There is just something so cleansing about a fire.  Plus, it is a good way to have fun at home.  I spent the morning cooking.  I had a big pot soup on the cookstove along with duck egg white meringue cookies & duck egg yolk frittata.  Pretzels, peanuts, and pickles where the campfire snacks.  After all my cooking I managed to get out to the fire for a cup of tea and a few moments alone.  (DH had got it going while I was in the kitchen)  It was nice to have some quiet and reflect on the past year or rather just stare at the fire and try not to think or plan.  Just be with the moment.  Feel the heat of the fire before me and the cold on my back.  It is the best kind of meditation.

Later I was joined by my son and his pal, my husband and a good neighbor friend.  A small lovely gathering with good conversation and laughter.  The fire went into the night.  DH & I ended the evening with a bottle of wine and embers.  Another year begins.  Another day begins. Another moment begins ~~~

Letters swallow themselves in seconds.
Notes friends tied to the doorknob,
transparent scarlet paper,
sizzle like moth wings,
marry the air.

So much of any year is flammable,
lists of vegetables, partial poems.
Orange swirling flame of days,
so little is a stone.

Where there was something and suddenly isn’t,
an absence shouts, celebrates, leaves a space.
I begin again with the smallest numbers.

Quick dance, shuffle of losses and leaves,
only the things I didn’t do
crackle after the blazing dies.

---Shop News--- ☼ Forest & Field Happenings ☼ ~~~Gratitude~~~

My life is FULL of random abandoned.  Finding time to be here, blogging, is become more and more difficult.  Abundance calls and garden produce waits for no woman!  Right now as I type I am multi tasking.  I have dinner in the oven with a timer set.  Every few minutes I will be running downstairs to attend to things, then back up here to type a few words.  No complaints, it is amazing how much I can write in 5 minutes!  So my dear reader, please, bear with me during this busy time.  I will be here as much as I can.

 Some Days are like this

In Between all that the laundry needs doing, the meals prepared, before I know it all that wood will need to be brought in for the winter. This week I had just a wee bit of stress around all that needs doing.  The best cure for me from that kind of stress is a very productive day.  I am happy to say yesterday was such a day!  Everything in that wheelbarrow has been dealt with!

My sewing room and Etsy office are in disarray with many projects in progress.  Photos need taking, listing need doing, printing, tagging, bookkeeping....etc, etc, etc!  But I am very grateful, this month already I am averaging a more than a sale a day!!!  I counted up my sales in all 4 shops and they equal over 500 since I started with Esty in January 2012, not too shabby.

I had planned another "productive" day to get me further from my mental angst.  All started well with the reconstruction of my kitchen after yesterdays produce palooza ( got everything dealt with from the wheelbarrow...I didn't say I got the kitchen cleaned up...I am not super woman!)...when a very tall young man, who it still amazes me that he is actually, my child, came to me and asked if I would make lunch and watch a soccer game with him.  I hesitated, feeling that welling rush of stress, then he looked at me with doe eyes and said pleeeease.  He will be off to college in 2 weeks.  I enjoy soccer only because he has schooled me to enjoy it.  Without him I will never watch soccer again.  So lunch was cheese, crackers, cucumbers, tomatoes, and my famous eggplant relish.  We huddled together around his laptop and watched Arsenal barely beat Crystal Palace 2-1.  Good thing since the boyo is an Arsenal man.  And yes he is a man and I am his mother.  These moments are more rare than the perfect, purple, bug free, cauliflower.

~~~Gratitude~~~
The end of our Autumn chores usually culminates with a big burn.   All year long we collect brush from clearings, old rotten pallets that once held firewood, and garden waste that might be too buggy to compost.  There is something exciting about the burn, beyond the big flames.  There is definitely a feeling of ~ purge!  Burning is so primal...I can feel the connection to my ancestors who may have burned for more ceremonial reasons.  I have to admit, I do mentally toss "things" into the flames that I would rather not have in my life anymore. Letting go into the fire all that no longer serves me.  The flames of the south with the sun heading towards a lower asmuth each day with lengthening nights until the Solstice.  It feels good to be done with Autumn and ready for winter!
~~~I am Grateful~~~

Burning Brush
burning brush out back,
sticks and twigs and limbs...
when the pile got low
i started throwing in,
memories, feelings, and dreams.

the fire blazed high,
but just for a moment...
then died to embers,
steady and pulsing...
and so does time to the heart!

the flame that gasps for air,
strangled by its own ardor...
till the outer body burns,
what's left is pure fuel...
warming the feet of God!
