☼ Forest & Field Happenings ☼

Gardening and harvest is winding down... a bit.  I still have a pretty long list of things to do in these final days... some potatoes to still dig, garlic to plant, holding out until the last possible moment before calling it with the eggplants, peppers, beets, carrots, & leeks.  I don't really want to think about the firewood.  I have been so busy in the gardens and the kitchen that I haven't found time to slip into the woods...until today.  DH offered to chainsaw anything that might be obstructing my trails but, before he lugged the chainsaw into the woods I needed to make an exploratory walk and assess what was needed.  I knew this old pine needed to be cut and it is near the house.  I was sort of dreading what I might find as to the state of my trails.  I am not sure I will have time to maintain them this year but, I was pleasantly surprised!  I think I can get by with very little brush cutting before the snow flies!  Also, only 3 spots for chainsawing and not in the way back part of the trails.  So here is a little explore down the too long neglected woods...though I am sure "they" don't feel neglected, except for, maybe, the Ravens.

The Ravens have returned to our woods from wherever they go for the summer.  They have been croaking and swooping at me for the past week or so.  I grabbed a handful of duck food to leave them below their nest.  But, they better hurry since it looks like a squirrel is occupying the stump I use to leave offerings!

~~Pausing & Seeing~~~ small beauties along the way.  Oh how, I have missed the woods and the slowing it brings to my busy self.  This time of year is a mix of worn down life as well as brilliant beauty.

out of the green woods   at the

“We depend on nature not only for our physical survival. We also need nature to show us the way home, the way out of the prison of our minds. We got lost in doing, thinking, remembering, anticipating; lost in a maze of complexity and a world of problems. We have forgotten what rocks, plants and animals still know. We have forgotten how to be – to be still, to be ourselves, to be where life is: here and now.” -Eckhart Tolle

☼ Forest & Field Happenings ☼ & Shop News~~~

Finally, some sunshine!  Yesterday was a kick a donkey in the butt day...!  It started out slow.  I actually slept in until 8:00am!  My son got a summer job at the local grocery store 15 minutes away.  He is working in Produce so he needs to be there at 6:00 AM or 7:00AM.  The boyo and I are more owly than larky.  (DH is the lark...so over the long weekend I was up early with him even on the boyo's day off)  Anyways, I had a tough time getting going.  I felt more like sitting on a beach somewhere.  I had planned to put my pepper & eggplants in the ground but they looked a little sorry after a cold night of hardening off outside.  So I decided to take on the dreaded task of cleaning out the cold room....

Just one of those tasks that I tend to delay.  A lot of hauling outside, hosing and cleaning.

Also, the ducklings seemed a little crowded to me so time to disassemble the brooder.

The two tasked are linked.  I will use the cardboard in my blueberry patch and all the leaves I packed my winter carrots in from the cold room as mulch.   http://injoyemporium.blogspot.com/2013/10/tuesdays-tip.html

The Duckies were a bit nervous about the change.  They stayed in a huddle most of the day.  I made the change little by little and finally had to get in and handle a few and dip their heads in the water.

By this morning they were completely comfortable again.
Now they have some space to runner around as Runner Ducks should!

I also did some hoeing in the gardens, planted some beans and beets.  I put the final coats of paint on the bathroom vanity...yes we are still working on our bathroom...guess I am behind on all the news!   My sewing room is in complete chaos!  I sold 6 puppets a few days ago and have been contacted by a community theatre to custom make some larger puppets.  So evenings when I have any energy left I am cutting out puppets.  May has been a good month in my shops!  On the way to the mailbox this morning with a bit of Vintage heading to Hawaii a Raven Croaked at me and swooped by....

So I took a little offering to the Raven Tree.
All has been quiet and empty in the nest ~ seems the young have fledged.
I do see a Raven now and then though.

Runa was pretty worn out from following me all day!

☼ Forest & Field Happenings ☼

Plant Babies got moved to the Big Shed

Things are getting busy, buzzy, and buggy!  A warm day today. A good amount of  time spent in the gardens.  Feels good to get things done then come inside and find a bunch of Etsy sales.  It was a very good day!

Made even better with the first asparagus for dinner!

Runa nabbed one too!

Planted early potatoes today so this garden is all planted!

DH rototilled on the weekend so just getting started with the Big Garden.
Artichokes in the ground!

Sunflower House Planted!

My planting outfit...white repels blackflies?!?

Not much time for the forest today...took a little tidbit to the Ravens.
This is the first time they both stayed in the nest and were quiet when I came!
Think they are becoming accustom to me and know I am a bringer of gifts.

Wishing you well with however you spend your spring!

*Grateful*

I have needed quiet lately.  There has been a shift.  A dear member of our community passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack late last week.  He was only 62, a loving father, husband, & brother. One of a trio of brothers who adds light and joy to our neighborhood.  A wondrous craftsman.  A friend to many, A man that will be truly missed.

I am a professed hermit, I do spend a lot of time alone...but not completely.  I have lived in this area for 28 years now.   Lives intertwine, kinship is created.  There are gatherings for fellowship, fun, politics, or lending a hand.  There is true connection here.  It is hard for me to explain.  I grew up in the suburbs of Seattle.  I know what it feels like to be anonymous.  We did not know our neighbors that were a stones throw away even after living in the same house for 15 years.  Here I feel "well" known.  There are so many folks I could turn too if ever I have a need and so many that have given me a hand without my request in times of challenge.  These same folks respect a persons privacy and ones need to be enclosed in a private spot and will just leave you be.

As our community prepares to celebrate this man's life and support his grieving family I feel my Self sad but deeply, deeply grateful to be here among so many extraordinary & humble folks.  There is a sense of deep love flowing.  There is gratitude for the life that is emerging all around as the winter world wakes up.  Spring is the perfect time to experience the continuation of life.

The work of life goes on.  I plant, things grow, birds nest...my heart is with my community and the one who is with us no more.

The world is always full of trouble and always full of joy.  I choose joy~~~~

I leave you with a poem that always brings me comfort..

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the middle of the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
